The Dirt Pony 300 hosted by Desolate Motorsports
A few weeks ago, we hosted a Broncos only trip titled “The Dirt Pony 300.” The event was a fun trail run starting in San Bernardino off the 15Fwy and ended all the way at Primm, Nevada. It lasted two days covering over 270 miles of dirt with total of 18 Broncos.
We weaved our way out of the mountains and into the high desert to the North. Climbing up switch backs and driving through the hills was a nice warm up, but that was soon about to change after we hit Highway 138 to continue into the desert. We met the chase truck at our first checkpoint on a lakebed and resumed our course through Lucerne Valley. By now, the terrain had completely changed from lush mountains to dry desert. With all the Broncos on the trail, we needed to keep a steady pace to make it to camp before sundown.
Everyone made it through the first day with only a few minor setbacks. We rolled into Afton Canyon right on schedule. As everyone was setting up their camp for the night, the sun dropped displaying an awesome sunset, and the taco guy fired up his grill. Tacos started flyin and with everyone’s stomachs full and red cups around the fire, battle scars and war stories were discussed among the group from the day’s events.
Early the next morning, everyone packed up, made their final trail fixes if they needed to and prepared for the water crossing. The water level was much higher than previous years but everyone got through it without getting stuck. Now with the free car wash from the Mojave River, we charged our way out of the canyon towards the lava rock beds. We made our final fuel stop at the Shell station on Cima Rd and ended up splitting the group. The final stretch of the trip was the roughest without a doubt but had some of the most scenic views of the trip. After following the power lines for a bit, we crested the last hill and could see the solar panels and Highway 15. With the end in sight, it was a mad dash to the casino from there. We checked into Buffalo Bills to let the Broncos rest for the night.
With everyone cleaned up from the trip, we met at the tree bar for drinks to celebrate the success of the trip. A big thank you goes out to everyone who joined us. It was great to see fellow Bronco enthusiasts lending a hand to anyone who needed it along the trail. Everyone finished with a big smile on their face and was already asking about next year’s trip! Keep your eyes peeled for when we announce next year’s event!
