The braces are the smaller tubes running down at an angle across the front of the bumper. These dramatically strengthen the design, and help spread the load out. Lights are heavier than you think, and with them suspended away from the mounting bolts, without the bracing you are likely to see a small amount of deflection with the light bar assembly.
